I got a bit bored with my last attempt at a theme, so I tried something else this time. See the results at http://www.digitaldusk.com/gallery
Its still a work in progress - got a few things to clean up before I'd say its useable as a theme, but so far its working quite nicely. I've implemented a "latest images" and random thumbs and thumbnail navigation on the image details pages.
Pretty badass dude =) Lots of dynamic stuff going on here, very nice. One thing I am not so keen on though is the effect of having images "faded out" unless you run your mouse over them. From a UI development perspective, using a visual cue on mouseover is a great way to show the user that this element can be clicked or activated in some way. However, the dimming of the photos to me almost suggests that they are "inactive", or unclickable. Furthur, it makes it difficult to browse the entire grid of thumbnails without mousing over each one to get a clear picture. Even if you faded up the images just a litte bit so that they looked clear in thumbnail view, and then brightened subtley (even 1-2% brighter) when you moused over them it would be an improvement.
You know, keep it if you want though. From an artistic perspective I guess this is kind of cool. I am evaluating it from a more usability centered perspective.
I've now got my theme cleaned up for a try-out download for anyone that's interested. Download a copy from http://www.digitaldusk.com/download/theme-element.zip - this is for Plogger Beta 3 only. Just unzip the file to your themes directory and it will appear in the admin page.
There's probably still a few problems with some things, but its been working quite well on my site for a while now. Please post any comments/feedback here.
