    Thumbnails are generated automatically on the fly, either when you view them in the backend or the front-end. If they have already been generated, it will used those cached versions. If you change thumbnail options in the Admin -> Options tab, the thumbnails will automatically be regenerated. You do not need to go through the Import tab, but you do need to either Upload or Import the images to get them into the database.

    yes, that is correct. You either need to upload via the Upload tab --OR-- upload via FTP to the uploads tab, then import from the Import tab.
