I am a Plogger (and data-base) virgin, so please bear with me. I am also a photographer with a modest online image library (< 5000 pics) ? built with an old copy of Dreamweaver, some basic HTML and a smattering of CSS. In upgrading the site I am looking for a reasonably simple image search engine that delivers the appropriate keyworded images to the searcher in a form very similar to the way Plogger seems to do this. This might be one or two images, or it might be 300, depending on the search.

Q: Is it plausible to use/integrate Plogger in my site mainly as an image search engine (rather than a gallery or 'portfolio' builder), or will I only be frustrating myself trying to make it do something it is not mainly designed to do?

    Thanks for your help.

My site is at http://www.jimbatty.com is this helps.

Have been away for two weeks. Sorry to see no replies as to Plogger's suitability as an image search engine. Given the expertise expressed on this forum in other areas, I take it that Plogger simply isn't used for this purpose ? thus no comments or experience in using it this way. Thank you to those who lent an ear.

    Hi LondonImages,

I was going to respond to your inquiry, but got busy with other things and then lost it amongst other discussions. Sorry about that.

Plogger was not necessarily designed to work only as a search engine, but I think it could easily be set up for that purpose. There is already search functionality built-in and could easily be modified / extended to produce better searchability (I know at least one other forum user has wanted to have an advanced search tool set up for Plogger, much like what you are possibly looking for).

Sorry again for the lack of response, but I think Plogger could be set up for what you are hoping to accomplish. Let us know if there's anything we can do to help.

    Hi Sidtheduck

Ahhh, perhaps there is some light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks for your reply. I will dig a little deeper into Plogger, get my bearings, and then no doubt have a few more questions.

I am that other user Sid speaks of. I think = P. I am working with ~50,000 images and have a user base that thrives on doing advanced searches. For the time being I have been really skating by on http://www.plogger.org/forum/discussion/1967/adding-mysql-field-to-search/#Item_3 the search usages from this thread. However, I have been meaning to catch up with Sid to try and develop an idea I have been dreaming up.

    Hi Chewbears

Sorry for late-ish response ? so much to do photographically, so little time for development.

Thanks for that link. Sounds really interesting and quite powerful. Do you have a publically accessible site where I could see it functioning? Do you rely solely on keywords being picked up from image info/exif data (entered in PhotoShop)?

I am equally late to notice your reply : P

I do not have a public access for my site. The exif information is inputed from the Exif headers using a php to add the proper fields to the database and then populating them with that information. Exif information is inputted, added, updated, and maintained using a product called exiffutils. Its reasonablely priced for all it can do as I have batch commands that will populate thousands of photos in minutes. So yes I rely 100% on the exif data.
